Climate Protection Initiatives

We are aware that petroleum products have an impact on the environment, and therefore work to develop alternatives and to improve energy efficiency. We have introduced an option for customers who are willing to contribute to the protection of the environment through carbon capture.

Group-wide Afforestation Project - Our Forest at Tree-Nation

Trees are important partners in climate protection because they can absorb and store carbon as well as produce oxygen. However, every year 13 million hectares of forest disappear - 17% of global CO2 emissions are caused by deforestation alone.

Therefore, Marquard & Bahls has made afforestation an important focus of its voluntary environmental protection measures. This year, we have drawn up a comprehensive concept which, among other things, includes CO2 compensation by means of afforestation measures. The concept has resulted in a group-wide project which Marquard & Bahls and all operating units are now implementing together. For example, the total flight emissions of our Marquard & Bahls Group amounting to 7,495 tons of CO2 in 2019 were offset by the replanting of more than 26,000 trees in the reforestation project CommuniTree in Nicaragua, certified by "Plan Vivo". This is our largest CO2 offset to date.

Other components of the project include tree gifts for employees and CO2-neutral websites. Watch the video to learn more about what exactly which company will implement. All trees planted so far can be found in the Marquard & BahlsOiltankingMabanaft and Skytanking forests on

Initiative Pro Klima

Initiative Pro Klima

The Initiative Pro Klima was launched by Mabanaft, Petronord, and OIL! Tankstellen in 2008. Its efforts focus on three areas: offering energy-efficient products, advice on environmental and energy issues, and promoting projects to protect the climate. Its projects concentrate on two activities – climate research and reforestation. For example, in collaboration with the Schleswig-Holstein State Forestry and the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald e.V. (German Forest Protection Association) more than 162,000 trees have already been planted in recent years. Furthermore, the Initiative Pro Klima sponsors the climate-protection project OceanRAIN (Ocean Rain And Ice-phase precipitation measurement Network for surface validation) at University of Hamburg’s Cluster of Excellence CliSAP. Its aim is to better understand the impact of climate change through long-term measurement of precipitation and examination of satellite data and derive inferences for eco-friendlier behavior.

BWOC Reforestation Project

We have introduced an option for customers who are willing to contribute to the protection of the environment through carbon capture. Our subsidiary BWOC has set up a program in the UK that offers customers with a fuel card the ability to capture emissions from fuels they have purchased by making a contribution to reforestation projects. Overall, more than 200,000 trees were planted since 2010, offsetting 43,000 tons CO2. As part of the overall project, BWOC calculates its own carbon footprint and captures this CO2 through reforestation.
